Arbutin is a skin lightener. It is a derivative of hydroquinone which is the gold standard for skin lightening. Hydroquinone is found in small quantities in many over the counter creams in other countries, but is banned in South Africa because of its abuse in the past.
Known side effects of hydroquinone include irritant and allergic reactions, hypopigmentation, hyperpigmentation and exogenous ochronosis.
Arbutin is a safer, yet effective alternative to hydroquinone and is found in many skin lightening creams at varied concentrations.
Arbutin will reduce the appearance of pigmentation and sunspots and help to improve an uneven skin tone.
