Exfoliation involves the removal of the oldest dead skin cells on the skin’s outermost surface. Chemical exfoliators in skincare products include salicylic acid, Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), and Poly Hydroxy Acids (PHAs). Salicylic acid is most often used in acne treatments as it is able to penetrate through sebaceous glands. AHAs and PHAs are most often used in anti-ageing treatments, where they promote cellular regeneration. Studies show that regular use of exfoliators promotes the production of collagen and elastic tissue to delay the process of ageing.
